I've been interested in the history of mediumship. In China and Africa people have been channeling animal spirits for a really long time (in China, foxes, weasels, hedgehogs, snakes and rats)
In the anglosphere it was popular from maybe 1850-1950 to channel spirits of the dead which seems like a bad idea since people can always ask you questions that their dead aunt could answer but you can't.
Seth and Edgar Cayce are examples of the modern kind of medium who channels an extraterrestrial entity of some sort. Cayce eventually ran into the problem that prophecies have a shelf life: if he was right there would have been a pole shift and quite a bit of the US would have been flooded
